The history and culture of Pernambuco is widely exposed, and thus preserved, among the several museums of the city. Arts, generally speaking, aids to narrate people's tales, and Recife, cradle and home of multicultural artists, know how to acknowledge that facet. MAMAM - Museum of Modern Art Aloísio Magalhães
Established in a house from the last century, along the Rio Capibaribe banks and lined up with Aurora Street manor houses, the MAMAM was derived from the old Metropolitan Gallery of Art Aloísio Magalhães. It was launched to give institutional support to the artistic production of Pernambuco and Brazil. The city of Recife became the route of the largest national and international exhibitions, according to the museum structure, that has a great value heritage. There are paintings, sculptures drawings, engraving and ceramic made by gifted artists from Brazil and abroad. Visits with bilingual guides.

MISPE - Museum of Image and Sound of Pernambuco
Quite different from traditional museums, it features specific characteristics. Its collection gathers more than four thousand pieces, among records, posters, “cordel” folk literature, musical scores, slides, magazines and newspapers that enlighten Pernambuco's cultural aspects, postcards, pictures and movies. The place has temporary exhibitions and a Temporary Exhibition about Luis Gonzaga. There is also a room with the exhibition of movies in Super-8 and 16 millimetres format, as well as the “Hamlet” Theatre and Cinema.

Abolition Museum
Established in the Sobrado Grande da Madalena, main house of the old Madalena Mill that, after the architectural improvements in the XIX century, received the coating of glazed tiles and neoclassical features. There lived counsellor Joan Alfredo, Council chairman that, in 1888, abolished the slavery regime in Brazil. Launched in 1957 to celebrate the abolitionists Joaquim Nabuco and Joan Alfredo, its headquarters current installation was possible solely in 1983. It features a broaden collection of Afro-Brazilian culture-related pieces as well as the Slavery period, including a huge computer-based library. Northeast Man Museum
Created in 1979, it belongs to the Fundação Joaquim Nabuco and is a centre of cultural reference in the region. The collection of three thousand five hundred pieces is a permanent exhibition. State Museum
Installed since 1940 in the XIX century house that belonged to the Baron of Beberibe's family, the museum has a collection with more than twelve thousand pieces, regarded as Pernambuco's foremost collection of its kind. It keeps a permanent exhibition with pieces from the XIX century until nowadays. A repairing room, a specialized library, a room for courses and lectures and two galleries that hold temporary exhibitions are enclosed to the museum.

Gilberto Freyre Museum-House
It was where the sociologist Gilberto Freyre spent most part of his life. It was named “Vivenda Santo Antônio de Apipucos”. The house is currently a museum and houses the intellectual heritage created and gathered by Gilberto Freyre. Around it, there is the Ecological Ranch, remaining of the old back yards, where the memorial was erected that shelters the sociologist and anthropologist, but also historian and writer's mortal remains. Gilberto Freyre's great last work was the establishment of the Gilberto Freyre Foundation. Both the collection and researches are available to the public.

Ricardo Brennand Institute
A cultural compound that comprises an art museum, museum, library and gardens, located in the old 77,000-sq. m. Sao Joao Mill. At the site, the public may witness one of the largest collections pertaining to the Dutch period in Brazil, with permanent exhibitions of Franz Post, The Trial of Nicolau Fouquet (depicted by 45 wax figures in natural size); Brazil landscapes from the late 19th century and early 20th century, pieces of sacred arts and cutting and thrusting weapons. The ensemble gathers two exhibition centres adequately arranged for international exhibitions; over 15,000 books including the asset from Jose Antonio Gonçalves de Mello and the writer Edson Nery da Fonseca, as well as books, anthems, folk, liturgical and chamber music of Priest Diniz; and Brazil's most comprehensive and richest private heritage of cutting and thrusting weapons. It also comprises Far eastern portraits, armours, and sculptures from 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, from different parts in Europe. The Ricardo Brennand Institute' art museum and gardens are open to public visits all year long.

Francisco Brenannd Museum/Workshop:
Located within a 15,000 sq. m. area, over two thousand pieces from the sculptor melt with the luxuriant nature to create a unique, totally exotic environment. In 1974, Mr. Brenannd became the sole owner of an old brick factory located in Varzea area. He restored the buildings and the plant.
